Anchorage is a sprawling city surrounded by wilderness. The city offers a wealth of attractions, cultural, historical and recreational activities, amazing and diverse natural beauty, sparkling waters, parks and wilderness sure to satisfy any getaway need.  Follow this two day itinerary to have a pleasant 48 hours stay in Anchorage and beat the clock.

Day 1 in Anchorage


Tony Knowles Coastal Trail at 8:00am!

Kick start your day at Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, an eleven mile paved trail for walking, hiking and biking. Take a short walk, run along the mountains, or go for bicycling or skating. Experience the nature beauty and spectacular views of mountains.  Birds, belugas and moose can be seen from many vantage points. Stretch along your legs along this beautiful trail!


Breakfast at 10:00am!

Head to the Gwennie’s Old Alaska Restaurant that serves hearty home-cooked breakfast. It includes salmon sausage, halibut and eggs, pancakes, are just a few shining example of their delicious menu. The eatery is full of old photos, native art and other knick-knacks.

Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum at 11:00am!

Next, head off to Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum and learn about the state’s aviation past. It has many historic airplane display- early bush pilots, vintage aircrafts, World War II fliers and other memorabilia. Know about the aviation industry contribution to Alaska’s growth at this museum!

Anchorage Museum at 12:00pm!

Spend your afternoon catching up the history, culture and art of Alaska! Head over to the Anchorage Museum that features many exhibits on science, art, history and culture of Alaska. Peruse some comprehensive and fascination art collections, drawings, paintings, dioramas and sculptures at the museum. Art and artifacts adorn the halls of this museum!

Next, head off to the Hands-on science museum- the Imaginarium Discovery Center. Explore the interactive exhibits that demonstrate the scientific concepts. It includes exhibits, like as BP Kinetic Space where you can know about motion, force and energy, earthquake shake table, or the Bubble Space where bubbles show shapes, light reflection and surface tension. 

Out to Lunch at 2:00pm!

Head to the Muse (625 C Street The Anchorage Museum) that serves up delicious American cuisine, or go to Tito’s Gyros (120 E 6th Ave) for barbecue and Greek fare. Anchorage is popular for its seafood, so try tasty seafood dishes at the Sherri’s at 5th (137 W 5th Ave, Anchorage), or at The Bubbly Mermaid Oyster Bar (417 D Street,). Craving for Asian and Japanese cuisine, stop by Ginger (425 West 5th Avenue).

Oscar Anderson House and Museum at 3:00pm!

Check out the historic house museum- Oscar Anderson House and Museum. It was built by Anchorage’s earliest resident- Oscar Anderson in 1915. Inside, check out the wonderful collection of vintage furniture, books, photographs, and other antiques and pieces. A glimpse of early Anchorage life!

Alaska Museum of Natural History at 4:00pm!

Stroll through the Alaska Museum of Natural History featuring exhibits of Alaskan minerals, dinosaur fossils and rocks. It also houses exhibits that depict the Alaskan Gold Rush, Native American cultural artifacts, and have several hands-on displays for children.

Valley of the Moon Park at 5:00pm!

Time for some outdoor fun! Head off to Valley of the Moon Park. It is one of the most popular recreation spot in Anchorage that has great places to have a picnic, open fields and play areas, and a climbing tower. There is a walking path, soccer field, and many swings and slides. If you have little ones with you, they will surely enjoy!

Go Shopping at 6:00pm!

Shop for the Alaska souvenir- “Woolens” at Oomingmak Anchorage Cooperative (604 H Street, Anchorage, AK 99501, United States). The woolens sold here are made from the undercoats of musk ox, known as “Qivuit”, which is lighter, softer and warmer.
  
Distance from Valley of the Moon Park: 1.2miles or 4minutes drive

Shop for clothing, accessories, gifts, all under one roof at Anchorage 5th Avenue Mall (320 West 5th Avenue, Anchorage, AK 99501, United States). It houses many retailers and specialty shops. These include Nordstrom, JCPenney, Banana Republic, Bebe, Fred Meyer Jewelers, Coach, Apples, Gymboree and Eddie Bauer, to name just a few. Also, it has plenty of Alaskan gift shops, like Alaska Wild Berry Products, Once in a Blue Moose and Iditarod Store

Head over to the Humpy’s Great Alaskan Alehouse for a beer. It has more than 60 beers on tap. Sip a few beers while enjoying local music at this beer spot!

The best dishes that you can get here are shellfish dishes, aged prime rib, fresh Alaska seafood and steaks.

Head off to the popular watering hole in Anchorage- Chilkoot Charlie’s. It has multiple bars with different themes. Hop from one bar to the next, sip a few drinks, get your groove on and enjoy the night!

Day 2 in Anchorage

Kincaid Park at 10:00am!

Kincaid Park boasts more than 60km of outdoor trails for hiking, biking, skiing and walking. It offers spectacular views, and has a large wildlife population as well, including moose, bear, lynx, eagles, fox, and many more. Relish the recreational walks and outdoors!

Lunch at 1:00pm!

Step into Kincaid Grill and Wine Bar (6700 Jewel Lake Rd) that serves international cuisines and wine, or go to Jen’s Restaurant (701 West 36th Avenue Olympic Center) for French, European and International cuisines. Hankering for American fare, head to the Bear Tooth Theatre Pub & Grill (1230 W 27th Ave), or The Rustic Goat (2800 Turnagain St). Taste the delicious Vietnamese and Asian food at Pho Lena (2904 Spenard Rd).  

Alaska Zoo at 2:00pm!

Marvel at the great diversity of wildlife at Alaska Zoo. The zoo features exotic and native wildlife in their natural habitats. Amur tigers, polar bears, grizzly bears, snow leopards, arctic foxes, moose, caribou, musk ox, Siberian tiger and other animals and birds call it their home. This is the most popular spot in Anchorage, not to be missed. Experience everything the Alaska Zoo has to offer!

Alaska Botanical Garden at 3:00pm!

Next, head off to Alaska Botanical Garden that features that features 150 native plants and more than 900 species of perennials. Familiarize with Alaska’s natural beauty and explore the themed gardens- herb, wildflower and alpine rock. Enjoy and have fun with family in the garden’s beautiful and relaxing environment!

Buy the best fur pieces, like coats, scarfs, gloves, boots, stuffed animals, headbands, earmuffs and blankets from this spot; it will surely impress everyone who sees it!

Drinks and Dinner at 7:00pm!

Enjoy a draft beer with delicious fare at F Street Station.  This low-key bar is known for its seafood, and dishes out mouth-watering food, like halibut burgers, halibut salad, halibut & chips, French onion soup, to name just a few. The plates are generous, food is delicious, prices are affordable and service is excellent at this spot!
